BHH dating problem

The BHH dating problem was a conjectural name for a major inconsistency in what dates were used for BHH, which makes it difficult to place it and anything defined in relation to it properly in the timeline. All sources agreed that the BHH Cycle took place in the late After-Human Era (AHE), though some used a different calendar era to express this, New Era (NE). After November 2017, the stories that immediately preceded BHH on the timeline were Frontier stories, set in either c. 75 or c. 150 AHE, so the dating problem was often framed in terms of how long the gap was between Frontier and BHH.

Other events on the timeline before and after BHH were defined in relation to the main events of the cycle, so the BHH dating problem threw these into confusion as well. Later timelines limited the uncertainty by making 400 AHE a hard date for when Ellis-Uara wormholes were discovered.

16th century — NE or AHE[edit | edit source]

Maiestas and the 2019–20 timeline article on Glastieven Mythology Wiki both said BHH took place in the 1520s AHE, with 1526 as an important fixed date when Ajax Inuta Krassen published a scientific paper on either higher dimensions or the Jenner Gate. It also mentions that some sources put it in the 1520s NE instead, where NE means "New Era" and 0 NE is an unspecified date in AHE. Kavanah, from November 2019, is based on the BHH backstory and is set in 1510 AHE.

52nd century AHE[edit | edit source]

The preferred dating in the first half of 2017 put the BHH Cycle in the 52nd century AHE. Kerry's "Timeline of events leading up to the creation of the Fourth Army", from February 2017, puts the BHH Cycle in the 5140s and 50s AHE.

Kerry amended the Fourth Army timeline in May to move every event forwards by thirty years, putting the BHH Cycle in the 5170s and 80s. BHH Wiki entries from May 2017, such as (2017) Black hole racing or (2017) Ciarraí Teagwyn Kavanah, also put BHH in the 5170s and 80s.

57th century AHE[edit | edit source]

Kerry's wiki entry on the old Glastieven Mythology Wiki for Ciarraí Teagwyn Kavanah gives dates in the 57th century AHE, putting the BHH Cycle's main events in the 5670s.

"Timeline of events leading up to the creation of the Second Fourth Army", written by Tom in August 2017 (and updated in October 2018), also puts the BHH Cycle in the 5670s. It does not specify whether AHE or NE is intended, though AHE is more likely as Tom probably copied the dates from Kerry's wiki entries.

Other dates[edit | edit source]

Kerry said in April 2021 that he half-remembered at least one source that put BHH in the 500s AHE.

Before November 2017, when Frontier stories were introduced, the background lore of the BHH Cycle was responsible for handling basically all dates in relation to space travel. A February 2017 source, "Piracy in the Postgate lands", says that traditional piracy in a frontier zone, the Postgate lands, was at its height from the 2150s to 2300s. No calendar era is specified as at the time all sources used AHE for the BHH Cycle. Another February 2017 source, "BHH Portal Physics", mentions in passing that the Postgate lands appeared in 2100 AHE.

"A simple timeline of BHH history" (which is unfinished) from December 2016 says the "colonial era" of space travel was "0–2000s". It uses the calendar era "TE" which has no clear meaning.
