Mala Dzumach Kavanah was an influential derata in the era of BHH, and an important character in BHH, both as the most significant villain and as a frequent anti-heroic ally to the Fourth Army. She was also the main villain of Ultrix stories, part of the Crossover Cycle. Mala was an Evonian exile who had left to live in the Underworld as a teenager. She held sway over most of the Dark Network; in most sources, she was well-known among deratas, though in some she was a more shadowy, low-key figure whose control of the Network was a secret. Mala had blackmail on most 'legitimate' powerful figures in Oburron, allowing her to manipulate history from the shadows.

In sources where she was well-known in the Dark Network, Mala started her rise to power about ten years before the main events of BHH. She manipulated the young kingpin Elvar ar Siora into creating a Third Derareti Congress, of which she was elected chair, abolished said congress, and sometimes established the Underground Ministry or the Flying Gang to consolidate her control over the elite. She and Ciarraí Teagwyn Kavanah developed some combination of an arch-rivalry, an alliance, or romantic tension. Mala mostly worked through her laptop from a secret base rather than appearing in person.
