Kingdom of Maisraln
The Kingdom of Maisraln was an ancient polity that defined the known world of Glastieven mythology for the first two millennia of its timeline. The core of Maisralnian civilisation was in the south, focused on the Oppula Forest and the plains of Qi, with a sheltered north-facing coastline. The kingdom extended outwards as far as the Ardalbrük Mountains to the west, Víthurkenning to the north, and Lonaoiisil to the east. Its southern extent was less well-defined, and Maisraln's intelligent dragons were never entirely subjugated to human royal authority, maintaining a Council of Dragons.
The kingdom was established when Queen Maya united the Five Empires of Maisraln in what became the year zero. Around five hundred years later, the successive reigns of Jonathan I and Jonathan II saw the royal court establish control over dragons and magic respectively through the War of Dragons and Humans and the Great Magical Charter, the latter of which instituted the Four Great Mages. Maisraln saw four hundred years of order and prosperous stability, credited to its command of magic and the social philosophy of Veremei. The central government began to struggle in the 1100s KY as Maisraln's global influence came to rely more on its economy, and the last king reigned until 1487, when he was overthrown in the Matchlock Revolution.
The Kingdom of Maisraln remained a very powerful concept. In the Twelve States of Maisraln, which immediately followed the last king's reign and lasted until the 1670s, the kingdom was still seen as an immediate reality. The Four Great Mages continued to exist, and in a reduced and impotent form, so did the royal court. The Maisraln Cycle was set in this era. Eventually, the dream of a re-united kingdom faded away and the last royal institutions fell apart. When mages were persecuted and driven underground, they looked to the old kingdom as a mythical ancient motherland and saw themselves as its diaspora. The Mission Cycle was set in this magical underground.
